The American Dental Association celebrates February as the month for children and healthy teeth. Teaching your children good oral hygiene habits is key to a healthy smile. Also, recommended is understanding what is important to know in dental care.
1. Baby Teeth are Not Important:
The first baby teeth that come in around 6 months are important for building the foundation of future teeth to come.
2. Teething Creates a Fever:
According to the ADA, if your infant is running a fever or has diarrhea, it is not due to teething and to call a physician.
3. Children Do Not Have to See a Dentist Until Permanent Teeth Come In:
The first trip should be scheduled no later than a child’s first birthday. After that, the dentist will determine the next schedule of appointments.
4. Thumb Sucking and Pacifiers Will Ruin Baby Teeth:
Sucking is natural for infants. However, if sucking continues after permanent teeth have come in, it can cause poor tooth alignment and bite issues which can be serious.
5. Sealants Are Not Worth It.
Sealants are painless and can protect from decay in both primary and permanent teeth.
And what about dental insurance for the little ones? If health insurance is covered at your work and dental insurance is included, that is probably your best option. If you have to pay for your own coverage, expect to pay between $20 and $50 per person, per month.
If your company does not offer dental, research online. Speak with an insurance agent representing the company you’re considering. Find out specifically what is covered or if it is a discount program. All can be different concerning office visits, tooth cleaning and removal. If it’s possible, speak with a supervisor who can give you a history of the company and help put your fears at ease regarding their legitimacy.
