With the arrival of fall, many residents in coastal areas may not be thinking of hurricanes or tropical storms.
However, industry data source the Insurance Information Institute recently reminded consumers that the hurricane season lasts until November 30. The organization says there are a number of steps homeowners can take to make sure they are prepared.
The III notes that standard homeowners insurance policies will coverage against damage from hurricane or tropical storm winds. However, flood coverage has to be purchased through a national program administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The National Flood Insurance Program provides for that protection, and recently received a year-long extension from the government. However, some lawmakers and industry advocates say a longer timeframe needs to be approved by legislators.
In the meantime, the III says consumers should have enough home insurance coverage to rebuild their house and replace their possessions. Furthermore, having an inventory of belongings ahead of time can help with the claims process.
People should also make sure they have an escape plan in the event a hurricane or tropical storm does arrive.
