The changes to Wisconsin’s minimum auto insurance coverage levels made last year could be short-lived if GOP legislators succeed in passing a bill to repeal them.
Former Governor Jim Doyle and the Democratic legislature had significantly raised the level of auto insurance coverage for the first time in decades, saying that the old limits were dated and not sufficient enough to cover Wisconsin drivers.
However, Republicans – with the strong backing from the state’s insurance industry – say the changes had gone too far, and imposed unreasonable rate increases on motorist, despite arguments from political opponents that the rate’s won’t drop significantly in any case. The party’s control over both houses of the state legislature, as well as the governorship, means the roll-back should be accomplished without much difficulty, if it decides to follow such a course.
Although repeal could mean savings for Wisconsin drivers, it’s still a good idea to have the proper amount of auto insurance coverage. Choosing to have minimal coverage could have dire financial consequences if you should get into an accident with damages that exceed the amount of coverage you have, experts say.
