Having a mentor

By Karla Sullivan

In this struggling economy with so much uncertainty, a mentor can provide the job seeker with guidance in the direction to follow since the career search can be confusing. A mentor may recognize talents that you would not have given a second thought. They can help you decide whether to pursue a large company or if you would thrive in a less-demanding environment.

A mentor also helps to build self-esteem and remind you that you are worthy of the reward. A mentor is your friend and confidante. Most assuredly, they enjoy changing lives for the better. Their own self-confidence shines when helping others.

In celebration of National Mentor Month, cultivate many mentors. One woman has a spreadsheet of over 50 names on it with a characteristic or accomplishment listed by each name that she most admires. If she has a concern or needs advice, she checks her list and contacts one or more that has been successful in a particular area. For example, she has five people that have been successful in perseverance so if that is her struggle, those are the ones she will call. Mentors can be doctors, lawyers, teachers, religious figures, senior colleagues or even a tried and true friend that can truly provide an honest insight into your career growth.

Mentors can be financial planners, insurance specialists that can guide your savings plan, retirement goals and guide your financial future. If you have purchased a new home or even remodeled, talk to an insurance agent that can determine if your homeowners insurance will cover problematic areas. Double check with those that handle your auto insurance to see if you qualify for discounts this year. Talk to a financial counselor for suggestions to balance your retirement portfolio.

If you don’t have a life insurance policy, this is a good time to explore benefits that will cover your needs. If you do have a policy, check to see if there are any readjustments because of new lifestyle changes that need to be addressed.

Mentor experiences can offer significant positive outcomes in all aspects of life.
