When road conditions are poor as it has been in the Midwest after Winter Storm Ion, if you can afford to stay home, that is probably the best scenario. However, most of us do have to venture out for employment, medical appointments, or those groceries we forgot when all of this started, it is important to make sure your vehicle is in good condition since odd problems can occur in sub zero weather.
Make sure you have adequate snow traction. Discount Tire offers the following suggestions:
· Check your tire inflation pressure regularly.
· All season tires may not have the best snow traction. They have a rubber compound that gradually hardens when the temperatures drop below 45 degrees.
· Braking and turning is compromised especially as the snow piles up on tire grooves.
· If warning lights indicate a tire issue, don’t delay in having it checked.
· If you have an ABS braking system, winter tires may still be a wise choice.
· Better winter traction tires will help the ABS deliver faster stops.
Anti-lock brake systems can prevent wheels from locking during emergency situations and helping drivers operate their vehicles more efficiently, especially in winter weather conditions.
The National Safety Council recommends the following when utilizing an anti lock brake system:
· Keep your foot on the brake; maintain firm pressure on the brake to enable four wheel ABS to work.
· Avoid pumping the brakes even if the brake pedal is pulsating.
· Allow enough distance to stop.
· Expect noise and vibrations in the brake pedal when your anti-lock brakes are in use.
· Read your vehicle’s manual and know the difference between four-wheel and rear-wheel ABS.
In extremely cold temperatures, it is very important to correct tire pressure. As the temperature drops, the air in your tires contracts. You should check your tire pressure in the cold and not in the confines of your warm garage since it can change once exposed to low temperatures.
To prevent unnecessary accident claims as the winter progresses, check with your local mechanic or tire retailer to make sure that your vehicle is adequately maintained. Poor tires and lack of braking knowledge can cause the driver to lose control even under moderate weather conditions.
Severe ice and snow can cause steering and braking to become almost impossible. If an accident occurs, some may be under the impression that insurance companies when filing a claim will take into consideration the fact that the road was poor but they must determine fault. Usually the fault lies in how safe a driver you are. Sometimes, if two vehicles collide on an icy road, a determination will be made that both are at fault.
Ultimately, any accident on your record can result in higher premiums or a declined renewal all together.
