Father’s Day is a celebration honoring fathers and father figures alike who have had a positive influence in our lives.
It’s a day that should be spent thanking our Dads for all of their hard work and dedication, not just showering them with gifts. Not saying gift giving is a poor way to thank your dad, but spend less time worrying about the gift and more time with him.
In the long run, it’s not about the gifts you give but about the memories you create.
Unfortunately, not all of us are fortunate enough to still have our dads in our lives – as I lost mine when I was only 10 years old.
Looking back at it now, I didn’t fully understand the financial and emotional strain the loss of my father had on my family. My mother, who was a stay-at-home mom at the time, had to pick herself up and go back to work, as she was now the sole breadwinner for our family.
Thankfully my dad not only had a life insurance policy but also had recently increased it as our financial needs had changed.
As I have grown up and matured, I often think about what would have happened to my family if my Dad didn’t have a life insurance policy and how different my life would be.
Would my family be able to afford our current home?
How would I have paid for college? Or would I have been able to attend college in general?
Would I have had to get a part-time job to help out?
These are the type of questions that race through my head every year around this time and every year I am more thankfully for what my father did for my family.
While he may not physically still be with us, he will forever be in our hearts and in our minds. My life and my family’s life would not be the same without his responsible decision of setting up a life insurance policy.
Giving the gift of life insurance this Father’s Day may not seem so special right now but, take it from me, it has been the gift that keeps on giving.
So don’t be afraid to talk about life insurance this Father’s Day as it shouldn’t be about death or dying but about love and the desire to protect those close to your heart.
