Police highlight potential car theft at music festivals

austin city limits festival theftsThis year, the second weekend of October will see thousands of people flocking to Texas for the Austin City Limits Music Festival.

While the event provides attendees with a bevy of live music choices covering many genres, it may also present car thieves with a smorgasbord of vehicles to try and burglarize or steal outright. According to television station KXAN, the Austin Police Department’s Auto Theft Interdiction Project is urging people to be careful while in the city for the festival.

A major insurance company is partnering with the department to promote billboards on taxicabs. The advertisements serve as a reminder that car thieves often gather when large groups of people come together.

The television station provided some tips regarding keeping a vehicle safe. Along with making sure it is locked, festival attendees should park in well-lit places and keep valuables hidden.

If someone does happen to become the victim of a vehicle theft or burglary, their property and car insurance may offer financial protection. Comprehensive car coverage provides against a car being stolen, while possessions generally fall under homeowners insurance policies.
